In a very challenging business environment for retailers, DIA once again demonstrated its resilience in 2013, generating a profit and creating shareholder value. Gross under-banner sales rose year-on-year to €11.48 billion, while underlying earnings per share increased by 13.6%. The company’s earnings performance was underpinned by three crucial drivers: higher cost effectiveness; the rollout and diversification of neighbourhood shopping formats in Spain and Portugal; and excellent momentum in emerging markets.
